Diabetes Stigma on Mashable.

When I think about what we can do to improve the psychosocial health of people living with diabetes it always comes back to this, for me: share your story. Even when it feels like you're saying the same things again and again, keep sharing. Keep talking. Keep showing. Keep living. Don't give up.

This is how we change the world for the better.

  1. I recently started my own blog about living with type one diabetes in college. In one of my first few posts, I shared my whole diagnosis story. It's so important for everyone to keep telling their stories, it's the only way that the word is going to get spread about type one diabetes awareness. I also wrote a post about stopping the stigma that surrounds type one diabetes. It breaks me heart every time I hear someone make a joke about diabetes under the assumption of too many misconceptions about diabetes.

  2. I developed gestational diabetes with my 1st pregnancy at the age of 21. Now years later at 42 I was diagnosed type 2. The stigma associated with diabetes can take a major emotional toll on people trying to cope and learn to manage their diagnosis. As I did not eat my way into diabetes nor am I lazy. Both type 1 and type 2 are life altering and to steriotype diseases we have so much more to learn about help no one. Have compassion, and show respect to those who face this daily struggle because a stigma only adds to this already hard burden. Don't self blame, hold your head high and do the best you can. Often times as a type 2 diabetic I feel looked at in a hurtful way. Often it seems those with type 1 want to make it clearly known, to avoid the stigma of being associated with type 2 diabetics; a disease people often associate as self-inflicted. I have highs and lows too, having one or the other does not take away the challenge we all face. We all struggle in our own ways together. Stay strong and don't let anyone make you feel ashamed of being aware of your condition which ever that may be. ~MLW
